Question:  What can I expect from my first massage session?

Answer:  On your first visit you will be asked to fill out a health history intake form.  I will conduct an in-depth interview in order to determine what your desired results and goals are regarding your massage.  This is done so that I will be able to customize the massage in order to achieve your desired results.

Question:  Will I need to undress completely?

Answer:  You will be asked to undress to whatever point you are comfortable.  I will leave the room so that you can undress and get on the massage table in private.  On the massage table will be two sheets and a blanket.  You will be draped for warmth and modesty at all times.  The only parts of your body that will ever be exposed are those on which I am working on at that time.  At the end of the massage, I will again leave the room so that you will be able to get dressed in private.  I strive to create a safe and comfortable environment for each of my clients.

Question:  Is deep tissue massage painful?

Answer:  There are times when some deep tissue work can be very intense due to fascial and energetic congestion, prior injuries, held emotions, soreness from overuse, or the specific area in which I am working.  Receiving massage in tender areas often creates a very satisfying sensation of “good pain”.   However, there is a point where that “good pain” becomes too much at which point the body will trigger the release of stress hormones into the bloodstream, which is hardly the goal of massage.  We will work together to maintain the right pressure in order to effectively reduce tension and to meet the goals of the massage session.

Question:  Are there reasons that I should not receive massage?

Answer:  Yes, there are times when massage is contraindicated.  Some contraindications include fever, some types of cancer, and phlebitis to name of few.  I will always discuss your current health issues in order to make sure massage therapy will be beneficial to your health.

Question:  Is it safe to have a massage during pregnancy?

Answer:  Yes.  Massage therapy can be very effective in relieving tension and muscle soreness during pregnancy, helping to prepare for labor as well as making the post-partum period less difficult.  I was trained in pregnancy massage techniques at the Atlanta School of Massage.  I will require that your Doctor or mid-wife is aware that you are receiving massage therapy.

Question:  How often should I get a massage?

Answer:  The effect of massage and bodywork is cumulative; meaning each session builds upon the previous session.  I believe that it is not necessarily frequency but regularity that is important.  Some might choose to come weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly.  If you see massage as an essential part of your overall healthcare, you will choose what is right for you.  For those who are seeking help with chronic pain or are recovering from an injury, several visits in a short time span may be needed.  Each persons needs are different.
